    Why You Need To Care

Conference USA couldn’t ask for a more ideal final weekend of the regular season. Marshall-Western Kentucky to decide the East Division on Friday, and Southern Miss-LA Tech duking it out for the West.

The Bulldogs were supposed to be in this position, a veteran team that won nine games for Skip Holtz last season. The Golden Eagles, though, have been the league’s biggest surprise of 2015. Southern Miss is soaring under third-year coach Todd Monken, doubling its win total from the past three seasons combined. Neither school has lost in the past month, setting the stage for a compelling and competitive matchup in Ruston.

    Why Southern Miss Will Win

The Golden Eagles aren’t just winning games; they’re embarrassing opponents. It’s all come together this year for Monken, whose team has won each of the last five games by at least three touchdowns. USM is balanced on offense, with the passing of Nick Mullens and the running of Jalen Richard and Ito Smith. And the D, led by DE Dylan Bradley, CB Kalan Reed and LB Brian Anderson, is second in the conference in yards per play. This is a complete team, with a complete disregard for Louisiana Tech.

    Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

LA Tech is USM … with home field advantage and a track record in important games. While playoff-style games are old news for Holtz & Co., how will the Golden Eagles react to the moment … on the road? The Bulldogs have balance, too, with an even better backfield combination of QB Jeff Driskel and RB Kenneth Dixon. Plus, the veteran defense has held the last four opponents to no more than 17 points.

    Player Who Matters

To maximize its offensive potential, Southern Miss must get Richard and Smith cranking between the tackles. But few teams have succeeded on the ground against LA Tech, which leads the conference in run defense. The Bulldogs allow just 3.3 yards per carry. And if the Eagles fail to contain DT Vernon Butler, he’ll blow up the USM backfield.

    What’s Going To Happen?

Southern Miss is an outstanding team, led by a coach who could be targeted for a promotion in a couple of weeks. The Eagles have been every bit as good as the Bulldogs in 2015. But Louisiana Tech has been in this position in recent years, and has the luxury of playing at home, two key factors tipping the scales in its favor. This shapes up as a 60-minute slugfest, with Dixon earning MVP honors for his ability to move the chains and punch in scores at pivotal junctures of the game.
