So just how good is Citadel? The Bulldogs lost last week in a tough game to a terrific Chattanooga team, but before that, everything was rolling. They lost big to Georgia Southern in the battle of option offenses, but if South Carolina isn’t fully focused, it’s going to be in big trouble trying to hit the curveball.
South Carolina has played well, losing three straight but all in close games against Texas A&M, Tennessee and Florida. All that really matters now is whether or not the Gamecocks can screw up Clemson’s dream season next week, but the team and the program could use a fun moment first.
It’s an apples-to-oranges situation in terms of handling running games, but South Carolina hasn’t been able to figure out the run all season long. It hasn’t faced a true option attack, and the bad run D stats are mostly coming from having problems with elite players like Nick Chubb and Leonard Fournette, but there’s no way to simulate what Citadel does. Either you can stop it or you can’t.
It might not always be pretty, but South Carolina’s offense actually is finding a few things that works. The ground game should be able to line up and pound away on the Citadel defensive front that can be moved on. This is just the second game this year for Citadel against an FBS team – the first one was a 48-13 loss to Georgia Southern. A balanced offense should be able to control the clock and the game – USC can’t let Citadel own the time of possession.
South Carolina’s Skai Moore is having a massive year lost in a bad season for the team. The veteran linebacker made 25 tackles over a two week span against Vanderbilt and Texas A&M, and was solid over the last two weeks as one of the team’s leading tacklers. In a game like this against the option, he has to be in on just about everything and take away what the Bulldogs are going to try to do on the outside. Expect double-digit tackles.
South Carolina might get caught looking ahead, and the last thing the defensive front wants to deal with right now is a slew of cutblocks, but the offense will be good enough to get by. The team needs a win – it’s not going to mail this in.
