South Carolina Coaching Search Update: Will Muschamp On Interview List

South Carolina coaching search update. Will Muschamp makes interview list with two other candidates -- as of now.

    December 3, 2015

Shawn Elliott, Will Muschamp and Lincoln Riley are targets in South Carolina’s coaching search.

The South Carolina Gamecocks said goodbye to the winningest coach in the history of their football program earlier this season when Steve Spurrier, father of the “Fun ‘n’ Gun,” retired.

Spurrier’s decision, which came following a 2-4 start to the season, allowed offensive line coach Shawn Elliott to step into an interim head coaching position.

Under Elliott, the Gamecocks went 1-5, but the tone around the program changed. The playbook was adjusted. Music, all of the sudden, was being played at practice and in the locker room.

Despite the lack of wins, Elliott breathed life into the team, and that’s why the Gamecocks gave him an interview on Wednesday to be the full-time head coach, according to ESPN’s Chris Low.

Low also added that Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley are on the interview list, too.

Muschamp went 28-21 in four seasons as head coach of the Florida Gators before being let go last year. He quickly joined Gus Malzahn’s coaching staff as Auburn’s defensive coordinator.

Riley, a former Texas Tech quarterback, stayed on with the Red Raiders as an assistant until 2009 when he became the offensive coordinator with East Carolina, which in turn led to the offensive coordinator job with the Sooners in 2015.

Oklahoma is ranked seventh in total offense and third in scoring offense this year.

*UPDATE* USA TODAY’s Dan Wolken has confirmed that Will Muschamp will interview for the head coaching job with the South Carolina Gamecocks on Friday.
