Three-star athlete Shatar McClay committed to the Tennessee Volunteers on Thursday, giving the program its second athlete in the 2018 class.
Butch Jones is good at keeping ’em close to home. On Thursday, 3-star athlete Shatar McClay committed to the Tennessee Volunteers via Twitter, marking the fourth player out of four in UT’s 2018 class to come from within the state.
“First thing [sic] first I want to thank God because it took a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get where I’m am [sic] today. This has been one tough recruiting process. I want to thank my parents, coaches, teachers, and the rest of my loved ones for pushing me to be my best and I’m happy to announce that I plan to continue to be my best and pursue my collegiate football career at the University of Tennessee. I am beyond blessed to not only receive the offer but to accept it. Go Big Orange!”
In an interview with Inside Tennessee following his commitment, the Clarksville, Tennessee native, expressed that UT’s proximity to his hometown is what sealed the deal in his recruitment process (it’s roughly a three and a half hour drive from Clarksville to Knoxville).
“Tennessee is home,” McClay said. “Closer for my mother to come to (see me) play — and the rest of my family. So I wanted to be close to home.”
McClay is the No. 3 athlete in the state of Tennessee for 2018, and No. 75 ATH in the nation. He’s the second athlete in the Vols’ class, joining 4-star Alontae Taylor out of Manchester, Tennessee.
