The San Jose State Spartans will leave the mainland for Hawaii to take on the Rainbow Warriors this Saturday in a West Division matchup.

The Spartans (4-6, 3-3 MW) have had their share of bad luck recently, losing their last two games by a combined four points, including last week’s 37-34 heartbreaker to Nevada in overtime. San Jose State held a 31-24 lead late in the game, but left to much time on the clock as the Nevada Wolf Pack put together a 13-play, 75-yard drive to tie the game. In overtime, the Spartans settled for a field goal and put faith in their defense to stop the Wolf Pack. They were unsuccessful yet again as Tyler Stewart hit Jarred Gipson for the game-winning touchdown. Kenny Potter had a big game for San Jose State, accounting for 302 total yards and throwing for three touchdowns. Potter’s 116 yards on the ground marked the first time in 30 years that a Spartan quarterback rushed for 100 yards (Doug Allen rushed for 117 yards in 1985).

The Rainbow Warriors (2-9, 0-7 MW) are embarking on their last chance to earn their first conference win of the season. Hawaii was unsuccessful last week, falling to Fresno State, 42-14, at home. The Rainbow Warriors hung tough early, tying the game at seven on a Ikaika Woolsey touchdown pass to Makoa Camanse-Stevens, but the night would turn sour after that as the Bulldogs outscored the Rainbow Warriors, 35-7, the rest of the way. The Hawaii defense had no answer for Zach Greenlee, who passed for 285 yards and 6 touchdowns — both career highs. Marcus Kemp (5 rec, 105 yards) and Paul Harris (26 car, 126 yards) turned in solid performances for Hawaii. For Harris, his 126-yard effort was his fourth 100-yard game of the season and his 26 carries were a career-high.

San Jose State and Hawaii will meet up for the 38th time since the first game was played in 1936. The winner of Saturday’s game will break the 18-18-1 tie in the all-time series.
