    BYU’s Last Hurrah

It’s always a bit strange to put BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl considering the Honor Code, LDS beliefs, and all the other aspects of the program that don’t mesh with the fun and glitz of the casino world, but it’s a better bowl matchup than the other option, the Hawaii Bowl. It’s been a good season with plenty of fun moments, but they mostly came at the beginning against Nebraska and Boise State. Now it’s transition time with head coach Bronco Mendenhall taking off for Virginia, but not before he gets a shot to win his 100th game as the Cougar head coach. For the players, it’s a chance at a ten-win season, and the first big win since early September.

With time to reflect, Utah could spend this month wondering what might have been

There was a brief moment during the regular season that the Utes looked as if they might be carrying the Pac-12 flag into the College Football Playoff. They were 6-0, having already beaten Michigan and Oregon in Eugene by six touchdowns, to elevate near the top of the rankings. Utah, though, couldn’t sustain the excellence, splitting its final six games. Playoff hopes evaporated in Tucson on Nov. 14, and then a South Division lead slipped away for good in a loss to UCLA a week later. Still, by winning nine in each of the last two years Utah has proven it can compete at a high level in one of the nation’s deepest leagues.
