Luke Fickell is looking to start his tenure at Cincinnati off with a solid first recruiting class as the 2017 cycle nears its end. The former Ohio State co-defensive coordinator is also working to bring the Bearcats up from their No. 55 ranking in scoring defense (26.9 ppg) and No. 72 ranking in total defense (422.8 ypg). He might be able to kill two birds with one stone thanks to his latest commit.
On Sunday, 4-star prospect R.J. Potts committed to Cincinnati over Indiana, Iowa State, Missouri and others. The Bearcats now have 14 total commits in the cycle and move up from No. 80 to No. 71 in the 2017 recruiting class rankings.
The nation’s No. 32-ranked safety released a statement explaining his decision.
“First and foremost, I want to thank God for blessing me with all of the doors he has opened up for me and the talent he has blessed me with to play the sport I love. I want to say thank you to all the schools who have extended me an offer and the coaches that wanted me to be a part of their program. Also, I want to thank everyone who been a part of my football career, coaching me to be the player and man I am today. With that being said, I’m proud to announce that I have officially committed to the University of Cincinnati to further my football and academic career.”
Potts has instantly become the Bearcats’ highest-ranked recruit.
At 6-foot-2, 180 pounds he has excellent ball skills and rarely misses tackles. He has the versatility to play cornerback and linebacker, assuming he adds some size to his frame while at Cincinnati.
