The Rashan Gary recruiting race is full speed ahead. Can Ohio State and Rutgers creep back in?

There’s an interesting recruiting battle brewing and it’s all thanks to the coaching carousel this season.

Rashan Gary is ranked as the No. 1 recruit for 2016 by 247Sports Composite. At 6-foot-5 and 293 pounds, he’s the type of defensive tackle that can anchor a line for years. Gary could be the difference a team needs to compete for titles.

That’s why he’s one of the most sought after recruits in the nation.

To date he’s received offers from 30 schools and countless pitches from coaches — two of those being new Rutgers head coach Chris Ash and his replacement at Ohio State, former Scarlet Knights head coach Greg Schiano.

If you like storylines, the Rashan Gary recruiting battle has them.

Gary, who is from Paramus, NJ, is located right in Rutgers’ backyard. But Rutgers had seemingly fallen off Gary’s radar when the Scarlet Knights fired Kyle Flood.

Enter Ash, the former Buckeyes defensive cooridnator. According to Todderick Hunt of NJ.com, Ash wasted no time connecting with Gary.

One school Ash is going to have to beat out is his former team, Ohio State. Schiano has been hot on Gary’s trail since being hired by Urban Meyer.

“I’ve never met Schiano,” said Jennifer Coney, Gary’s mother. “(Kyle) Flood was the one who offered Rashan. I’ve never met him. I’ve only heard of him. I’ve heard great things about him, but Flood offered Rashan — the first year he became coach at Rutgers, four years ago. But [Schiano and Meyer] called and we had a long talk. Schiano told me that he and Urban were best friends, so that intrigued me.”

Coney told Hunt that academics are a major factor in her son’s recruitment, and that Ohio State’s previous presentation weren’t up to their standards.

“He told me what he did at Rutgers and I said I heard that academics were paramount at Rutgers when he was there,” Coney stated. “And he said he’s going to do the same thing at Ohio State. And I said, ‘Well, that’s good, but signing day is right around the corner and there is no luxury of time. We don’t have it.’ And he said, ‘Well, I’m not talking about weeks, I’m talking about getting to the bottom of it, right now.'”

“He called me yesterday (Sunday), and he said as soon as the dead period is over, him and Larry Johnson are going to come to the house and he himself is going to do the academic presentation.”

While Ash and Schiano will have to battle each other for Gary’s services, Michigan is considered to be the biggest competition for everyone. The Wolverines are currently projected to receive Gary’s commitment by 247’s Crystal Ball predictions.

Alabma, Auburn, Clemson, among others, are also in the mix.
