We’re not used to thinking of Providence basketball as being consistently relevant, but you have to give credit to head coach Ed Cooley. He led the Friars to a second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season for the first time since 19990.
Now, Providence is ranked No. 15 and has started this season 8-1, and it should be more than happy with that becuase the only loss on its record came against Michigan State on a neutral site.
The Friars have bounced back with two straight wins, including their first road win of the season against Rhode Island, 74-72.
Boston College head coach Jim Christian wishes his team was in that position. His Eagles started the season off 3-0, but they’ve lost five straight games since then. The most recent outing ended with a 68-66 loss at home to UMass-Lowell.
Let’s see if the ice-cold Eagles can take down the Friars.
The Friars know how to score the basketball, averaging 75.9 points per game, and a big reason why is junior guard Kris Dunn. He’s leading the team with 18.2 points per game on 46.9 percent shooting. But to get a win, Dunn will have to continue to fill up the stat sheet like’s been doing (6.4 rebounds 7.3 assists). If he steps up offensively, the Friars will be in good shape, but if he continues to lock down on defense, it shouldn’t be close. Dunn is averaging 3.6 steals per game, and the Eagles don’t really turn the ball over that much. Boston College has only turned the ball over 84 times, so some key defensive play from Dunn can lead to some fast break buckets to help keep Providence ahead.
The Eagles need Eli Carter to come up with some big buckets against the Friars. Carter is averaging 16.4 points per game, but he’s only shooting 39 percent from the field and 27.9 percent from behind the arc. He has to be smart with his shot selection because Providence can put the game away early with a few scoring runs. Carter and Jerome Robinson have to protect the basketball, too. Dunn will be persistent on defense, so Boston College has to share the basketball and space the floor. If the Eagles are efficient on offense and box out on defense, they’ll compete.
Dunn will be the most important player in this game. He’s gotten off to an amazing start this season, and he’ll continue that momentum into this one. Dunn will fill up the stat sheet on both ends of the floor. The Friars will force some key turnovers and get out in transition. But Rodney Bullock and Ben Bentil will do damage down low on the boards, and Bentil will hit some big-time threes, too. Boston College loses this one by double digits.
