Former Tennessee head football coach Phillip Fulmer has become a top candidate for the open athletic director job for the Volunteers.
January 16, 2017Former Tennessee head football coach Phillip Fulmer has become a top candidate for the open athletic director job for the Volunteers.
A familiar face has appeared as the front runner for University of Tennessee’s open athletic director position: former head football coach Phillip Fulmer.
Per Chris Low, the university’s administration is feeling out Fulmer and whether he would be a good fit for the job that will become open on June 30, when current athletic director Dave Hart will step down. Hart announced his plans this past August plans, and the Volunteers have yet to find the right person for the position.
Fulmer is already a legend on Rocky Top, where he was the head coach from 1992-2008, racking up a record of 152-52, winning the 1998 BCS National Championship and two SEC conference titles. Despite his run of success, he was dismissed by then-athletic director Mike Hamilton after the 2008 season.
The College Football Hall of Famer has served in a few roles since leaving Tennessee, including as a sports analyst on CBS’s SEC Postgame Show and as a consultant for East Tennessee State University during its coaching search in 2015, but does not have any extensive experience in the running of an athletic department.
If hired, one of Fulmer’s first duties will, ironically, be the job status of current head football coach Butch Jones, who enters the 2017 season on the hot seat after a season that was a disappointment, ending 9-4 and failing to reach the SEC Championship Game.
