January 31, 2017Alabama has landed 4-star defensive end Phidarian Mathis, beating out LSU and TCU for the explosive pass rusher.
The defensive line at Alabama just got a little bit better with the commitment of 4-star defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis, and that is scary news for opponents in the SEC.
The 6-foot-4, 293-pound Mathis, out of Monroe, Louisiana, is the 95th top overall player in the 2017 signing class, including being the 8th best at his position in the state and No. 2 in the South. Alabama beat out LSU and TCU for Mathis’ commitment, with the defensive end passing up the home-state Tigers.
The Crimson Tide will be getting an athletic big man that has an excellent first step and is able to move laterally up and down the field. His hand skills at the line of scrimmage allows for him to disengage from the opposition, making him a good pass rusher, but will need to work on improving his moves to become a force in the SEC.
Mathis will be able to learn under one of the best defensive coordinators in the country in Jeremy Pruitt, and play at a school that is known for putting defensive linemen into the NFL.
