Penn State vs. Georgia TaxSlayer Bowl live stream, TV broadcast information, predictions and game notes.
January 1, 2016The Penn State Nittany Lions will take on the Georgia Bulldogs in Jacksonville on Jan. 2 in the TaxSlayer Bowl.
The Nittany Lions (7-5, 4-4 Big Ten) are making their second straight bowl game appearance and 46th in program history. Penn State didn’t live up to preseason aspirations in 2015 and finishing the regular season with three consecutive losses didn’t help matters. Last time out, the Nittany Lions were blown out at home by Michigan State, 55-16. The Spartans led wire-to-wire, taking a 20-3 lead to start and Penn State never got closer than 10 points from that point. Christian Hackenberg had another inconsistent outing, completing 22 of 29 passes for 257 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Chris Godwin benefitted when Hackenberg was on, catching both of his QB’s touchdown passes and finishing the day with 109 yards on 11 receptions. The Nittany Lions were able to find some success running the ball against a tough Spartans front seven as Saquon Barkley totaled 103 yards on 17 carries. Penn State will look to win its second straight bowl game after defeating Boston College, 31-30, in last year’s Pinstripe Bowl.
The Bulldogs (9-3, 5-3 SEC) are making their 51st bowl appearance in program history. Georgia had another disappointing season in the eyes of fans and boosters which led to the dismissal of Mark Richt, but the ‘Dawgs finished the season strong with four straight wins. Last time out, Georgia took down rival Georgia Tech, 13-7, in Atlanta. The Bulldogs were in total control of this one and a late Yellow Jackets touchdown spoiled Georgia’s shutout bid. The Georgia offense was run through Sony Michel, who carried the ball 24 times for 149 yards and a touchdown. Greyson Lambert didn’t find the end zone, but managed the game well without any turnovers. Lambert finished with 224 yards through the air on 18 of 25 passing attempts. Georgia will look to win back-to-back bowl games after knocking off the Louisville Cardinals, 37-14, in the Belk Bowl last year.
The 2015 TaxSlayer Bowl will mark just the second meeting between Penn State and Georgia. The Nittany Lions took the only other matchup 27-23 in the 1983 Sugar Bowl, which won them the National Championship.
Below is everything you need to know about the matchup, including the TaxSlayer Bowl live stream, TV broadcast information, game notes and prediction.
Georgia is the better team with the stronger defense and better offensive talent, but the Nittany Lion D will rise up just enough to get by. The coaching turmoil will matter – this won’t be quite the same Georgia team, and even with the old regime the offense couldn’t move the ball. Don’t expect anything pretty from either side.
