Recruiting profile featuring Palaie Gaoteote, the No. 16 prospect in the inaugural CI 25 recruiting rankings.

    Palaie Gaoteote Recruiting Profile

Palaie GaoteoteCI 25 Overall Ranking: No. 16
CI 25 Position Ranking: No. 1
    Hometown: Las Vegas, Nevada
    School: Bishop Gorman High School
    Position: OLB
    Height: 6’2″
    Weight: 210 lbs

    Playing Style

He’s 6-foot-2, 210 lbs and pure devastation for opposing running backs. Palaie Gaoteote can thrive as a SAM linebacker at the next level. He’s versatile enough to move around, though. He could bump over to the MIKE position in a 4-3 look and wreck halfbacks there, too. Gaoteote will live in the backfield. He flows down the line well and can make plays off the edge.

This screams Ohio State. The Buckeyes could employ him similarly to how they used Darron Lee when he was making plays in Columbus. With Gaoteote’s athleticism, there aren’t many schemes in which he couldn’t fit. It’s all about preference. Notre Dame could use him like it used Jaylon Smith as well. Throw USC into that same category.

    What They’re Saying

“Gaoteote is rangy enough to track down ball carriers in the flats, but also physical and tough inside the box, showing good tackling technique to end plays. He’s a physical presence matching up with receivers in the slot, uses his hands effectively and has good footwork in coverage.” – Scout

“Gaoteote showed physicality, motor, outstanding ability to bend the edge as a pass-rusher, strong hands and great instincts.” Barton Simmons, 247Sports

    Recruiting Overview

With Haskell Garrett and Tate Martell, two of his former teammates, at Ohio State, it’s hard to imagine the Buckeyes falling behind in Gaoteote’s recruitment. This is the kind of area on the recruiting trail where Urban Meyer excels. Of course, with another former teammate, Bubba Bolden, headed to Los Angeles, expect the Trojans to make a strong play to keep Gaoteote committed.

Notre Dame may have the biggest need for a linebacker of Gaoteote’s caliber, but it has some catching up to do. If Gaoteote does change his mind and decides to stay away from the west coast, Ohio State would be the move.
