December 2, 2015The No. 20 USC Trojans will face off against the No. 7 Stanford Cardinal in Santa Clara on Saturday in the 2015 Pac-12 Championship Game. It will be a rematch of their Sept. 19 game in Palo Alto.
The Trojans (8-4, 6-3 Pac-12) looked left for dead earlier in the season, but were able to turn it around under Clay Helton and will appear in their first Pac-12 Championship Game. USC has won five of its last six games, including last week’s 40-21 victory over crosstown rival, UCLA. A Paul Perkins touchdown gave the Bruins a 21-20 lead midway through the third quarter, but the Trojans finished strong, scoring 21 unanswered points to secure the victory. Cody Kessler put forth a modest performance for Troy throwing for 175 yards and two touchdowns, while Justin Davis (25 car, 130 yards) led a USC rushing attack that topped 200 yards on the afternoon. The Trojans defense haunted Josh Rosen, who was responsible for all three of UCLA’s turnovers. Rosen threw two interceptions to Iman Marshall and had a fumble returned 32 yards for a touchdown by Rasheem Green.
The Cardinal (10-2, 8-1 Pac-12) will represent the Pac-12 North in the conference title game for the third time in the last four years, winning the game in 2012 and 2013. Stanford has won its last two games, including last week’s 38-36 thriller over Notre Dame. DeShone Kizer ran in a two-yard touchdown with 30 seconds left in the game and all looked lost for the Cardinal. Nevertheless, an Irish defensive penalty and a Kevin Hogan 27 yard completion to Devon Cajuste on the ensuing drive set up Conrad Ukropina for the game-winning, 45-yard field goal. With Christian McCaffrey held in check (27 car, 94 yards), it was Kevin Hogan’s night. The senior QB only threw four incompletions, while passing for 269 yards and four touchdowns. Hogan seemed to find fellow senior Cajuste whenever he needed a big completion, as he reeled in five receptions for 125 yards and a score.
USC and Stanford will meet for the second time this season and the 94th overall. The Cardinal took the first meeting of the season 41-31 in Los Angeles, but the Trojans hold the all-time advantage 60-30-3.
Below is everything you need to know about the matchup, including the Pac-12 Championship Game online live stream, TV broadcast information, game notes and prediction.
Stanford is a tough opponent to face in December, when the bumps and the bruises of an entire season have accumulated. Both teams are going to run the ball well behind assertive O-lines, creating ideal working environments for Hogan and Kessler. McCaffrey, though, will deliver the decisive touchdown for the Cardinal, who’ll slip by the Trojans to secure a trip to Pasadena and move the North Division to 5-0 all-time in Pac-12 title bouts.
