March 11, 2016The Oregon State Beavers have made it to the NCAA Tournament. Here’s a preview of the team and a prediction of how they’ll do during March Madness.
Team: Oregon State Beavers
Record: 19-12
Conference: Pac-12
Head coach: Wayne Tinkle
How they got here: At-Large Bid
Gary Payton II is a superstar in the making, and his ability to score in transition, rebound, pass and play defense makes him the kind of guard who can take over a tournament. He’s not the best outside shooter, but he’s good enough to make him a threat to knock down the jumper, which opens his drives to the bucket. Tres Tinkle and Stephen Thompson Jr. provide balance, but Tinkle’s recent foot injury leaves him as somewhat of a question mark.
A lack of depth is an issue, and Oregon State relies on Payton a bit too much at times to do everything. When he runs into foul trouble, it’s a huge issue for the Beavers. OSU has been a bit up and down this year, and the team’s struggles at the foul line could be a problem late in games.
The Beavers’ inconsistency has been a problem, but Payton is the kind of guard who can work wonders in an NCAA Tournament setting. A second-round upset win isn’t out of the question, but it’s unlikely. This looks like a team with a ceiling at the round of 32.
