Oregon will fire tight ends coach David Reaves, who was arrested and charged with a DUI early Sunday morning.

The excitement and tone Willie Taggart brought to Eugene is quickly being drowned out by drama.

Early Sunday morning, David Reaves, the Ducks’ co-offensive coordinator, was arrested and charged with a DUI, as confirmed by the Eugene City Police Department.

Reaves, who also held titles as Oregon’s passing game coordinator and tight ends coach, had only been on the job for five days. Now, he’ll soon be unemployed.

Oregon Athletic Director Rob Mullens made it clear the university will not condone actions of that nature.

“Reaves has been placed on administrative leave, and the process to terminate his employment with cause has commenced,” Mullens said in a statement. “The University has high standards for the conduct of employees and is addressing this matter with the utmost of seriousness.”

Reaves, who followed Taggart to Oregon from USF, was stopped at 2:12 a.m. Sunday. He was with an adult passenger in downtown Eugene, according to EPD. It was suspected Reaves was impaired, and after an investigation by the responding officer, the soon-to-be former Oregon assistant was charged and booked at Lane County jail at 5:18 am.

Reaves was inked to a two-year deal worth $300,000 annually, as noted by Oregon Live. And that contract allows Oregon to discipline him or terminate his contract for “any material violation of local, state or federal law.”

As previously mentioned, this is not the first troubling incident to occur in Eugene since Taggart took the reins of the program.

Reaves’ arrest comes on the heels of a situation where three Ducks were hospitalized after “grueling strength and conditioning workouts.”
