Ole Miss got a huge lead against Georgia, and then actually held on, beating the Bulldogs 45-14. Quarterback Chad Kelly had a big game, throwing for 282 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another. The defense forced two turnovers and didn’t allow a touchdown until there were five minutes left in the third quarter and the Rebels were up 45-0.
Memphis’ defense remained solid, and the offense found some flow in a 77-3 win over Bowling Green State. Quarterback Riley Ferguson was on fire, throwing for 359 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Tigers rout.
The Rebels might be 2-2, but they are also one of the better teams in the country. Blowing leads to Florida State and Alabama can happen to a lot of teams. Kelly finally put a together complete game against Georgia after struggling in the second halves of both losses.
The defense was lights-out against the Bulldogs as well, and will now go against a Memphis offense that found a little rhythm last week. Linebacker DeMarquis Gates has been a force, recording 30 total tackles with two sacks along with three quarterback hurries.
Ferguson and the offense lit it up against Bowling Green, but will find the task much harder against a loaded Ole Miss defense. Wide receiver Anthony Miller is Ferguson’s favorite target, catching 17 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns while running back Doroland Dorceus has rushed the ball into the end zone three times this season. The defense will have to contain Kelly if the Tigers hope to pull off the upset.
Offense: Ole Miss. Wide receiver Evan Engram is often overlooked as one of the SEC’s top receivers.
Defense: Ole Miss. When putting together 60 minutes, this unit is as good as some in the nation.
Special Teams: Memphis. Kicker Jake Elliott is 5-for-6 on field goal attempts, including hitting a 50 yarder.
Coaching: Ole Miss. Freeze has made the Rebels relevant.
Intangibles: Ole Miss. The Rebels want to build upon that big win against Georgia. Oh, and there is a little bit of payback after the Tigers upset the Rebels.
Chad Kelly vs. Memphis defense
Kelly can surprise by running the ball when you are least expecting it, which makes it even more difficult for opposing defenses to prepare for the Ole Miss attack.
Spread: Ole Miss -14.5
Over/Under: 66.5
These two teams are familiar with each other, playing 61 times in the two programs’ histories. The Tigers got the best of the Rebels last season, and now Chad Kelly and Ole Miss are looking for payback. If the Memphis offense can move the ball against the Rebels, this could be a high scoring affair. I don’t see that happening though, as the Rebels shut down a fairly good Georgia offense last week. Kelly will continue to be outstanding, and Ole Miss pulls away in the second half.
Ole Miss vs. Memphis Score Prediction: Ole Miss 41, Memphis 23
