5 Keys to the Schedule
– The Rebels get their shot to make a massive early statement going against Florida State in Orlando. Considering the SEC opener against Alabama at home comes two weeks later – and with a tune-up against Wofford in between, when the polls come out on September 18th, it’ll be No. 1 Ole Miss if it starts out the season 3-0.
– Don’t fall asleep on the non-conference slate after FSU. Granted, Ole Miss will beat Wofford, but it’s an interesting offense to deal with. Memphis should still be good, and Georgia Southern is a nightmare to deal with thanks to its option attack.
– The games with the East are against Georgia at home and Vanderbilt on the road. It’s always a break for Ole Miss to have Vandy as the permanent opponent, so there’s no whining allowed playing Georgia.
– However, the Rebels do have a beef about the second half of the season going on the road for four games in six weeks. The run comes off a bye week, but they have to go to Arkansas, LSU, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt with the Georgia Southern and Auburn games in between. That game with GSU is murder on a defense late in the season – the D line will have to deal with all the hurt legs from the option cut blocking.
– WATCH OUT FOR … Vanderbilt. It’s the end of that brutal run of road trips and coming just before the Egg Bowl against Mississippi State. The Rebels might be beaten up and a bit cashed going on the road to deal with a good Commodore D.
