Oklahoma State vs. Iowa State Prediction, Game Preview

Oklahoma State vs. Iowa State prediction and game preview. The Cowboys look to stay unbeaten as they take on the Cyclones in Ames.

    September 26, 2016

In 2011, unbeaten Oklahoma State (9-0) went into Ames for a quirky Friday night game, and came away with a rough 37-31 loss that cost the team a shot at playing for the national title. This time around, it’s deep in the hunt for a playoff spot and can’t blow it now. Iowa State (3-6) turned out to need that win in 2011 to get bowling, and this time around it has to get this win, too. Check out the Oklahoma State vs. Iowa State game preview and prediction.

    Why You Need To Care

Now it’s Game On for Oklahoma State. Last week it needed to come up with a big win to prove itself, and it did more than that with a dominant 49-29 win over TCU. This is it for the road games with Baylor and Oklahoma coming to Stillwater to close things out. Is this the landmine? Is this the one the team really needs to worry about? The Cowboy offense is kicking it in at the right time, and it has one of the best wins by anyone in the CFP rankings, but it got dogged with a No. 8 ranking. It doesn’t matter – win out, and get into the playoff.

Iowa State needs to roll through its final three games to get bowling. The 24-0 win over Texas was nice, but that was the oasis after losing four of its last five games including a 52-16 pasting at Oklahoma last week. This is it for the home games – can it matter that it’s Senior Day and the big final moment? Win this, and road games at Kansas State and West Virginia won’t seem so bad.

    Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Yeah, Iowa State shut out Texas, but the defense is getting ripped to shreds by everyone else allowing 45 to both TCU and Baylor, 52 to OU, and 66 to Texas Tech. The secondary can’t handle anyone who tries to throw deep, giving up 405 passing yards or more in three of the last five games with Baylor taking it easy with 209 yards and three scores in the run. The Oklahoma State passing attack is on fire, cranking out over 200 yards or more in every game and coming up with ten scoring passes and 853 yards over the last two weeks. Iowa State won’t be able to stop the machine.

    Why Iowa State Will Win

Time to start throwing. The Cyclones need to start bombing away and keep throwing, even though the ground game should be effective at times against a solid OSU defensive front. ISU hasn’t been able to bomb away with the high-octane offenses on the slate lately, and it isn’t efficient enough, but it has to give it a try against a secondary that gave up 445 yards to TCU and 480 to Texas Tech the week before. Granted, the Cowboys were ahead, but the air show was still impressive. Iowa State has to establish it early on.

    Player Who Matters

Oklahoma State WR James Washington was having a good year and was on a solid run, but over the last two weeks he took his game to another level as one of the Big 12’s premier home run hitters. He crushed Texas Tech with 200 yards and two scores on just four catches, and last week he lit up TCU with 184 yards and three touchdowns – the last one the back-breaker – on just five grabs. Last year he only caught two passes for three yards against Iowa State – he’ll be slightly better this time around.

    What’s Going To Happen?

2011 this. Iowa State will come out fired up in its final home game of the season, but Oklahoma State will be too balanced and too explosive. It’ll be tighter than the Cowboys might like until the fourth quarter.
