Oklahoma State Hires Mike Boynton As Head Coach

Oklahoma State on Friday promoted assistant Mike Boynton to head coach to replace Brad Underwood, who last week left to become head coach at Illinois.
Oklahoma State moved quickly to replace former coach Brad Underwood, and athletic director Mike Holder didn’t have to go very far to find him.
The Cowboys announced Friday that they’ve promoted assistant Mike Boynton to be the next head coach after Underwood left last week to become head coach at Illinois.
Boynton previously served as an assistant for Underwood at Stephen F. Austin, helping lead the Lumberjacks to 89 victories and two NCAA Tournament appearances. He followed Underwood to Oklahoma State last season for Underwood’s only year with the Cowboys.
Underwood’s abrupt departure from Oklahoma State shocked many, with rumors having circulated that school officials didn’t know about Underwood accepting the Illinois job until it was posted on Twitter. There also were rumors that Underwood and Holder did not see eye to eye about the vision and expectations for the Cowboys’ basketball program, which might have led to Underwood leaving so soon after Oklahoma State fell to Michigan in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Boynton’s hiring comes shortly after former Cowboys All-American point guard Doug Gottlieb reportedly interviewed for the head coaching position. Gottlieb said earlier Friday that he would not be the next coach at Oklahoma State.
Holder instead turned to Boynton, who prior to his stint at Stephen F. Austin served as an assistant at South Carolina for four seasons. He played four years for the Gamecocks from 2001-04 before entering the coaching ranks.
