The Ohio Bobcats will battle the Appalachian State Mountaineers in Montgomery, AL for the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl on Dec. 19.

The Bobcats (8-4, 5-3 MAC) are headed to their ninth bowl appearance in school history after posting their best record since 2012. Ohio is riding into the game with a ton of momentum, having won three straight games including a 26-21 upset win over Northern Illinois. The Bobcats scored 13 unanswered points in the second quarter and were able to stave off the Huskies for the win. JD Sprague and Greg Windham each threw a touchdown pass for Ohio, while A.J. Ouellette took 30 carries for 140 yards to lead the Bobcats offense. The offense rewarded a stout defense that held Northern Illinois to 73 yards rushing by keeping them off the field and winning the possession battle 35:37 to 24:23. Ohio will be looking for its second win over a Sun Belt opponent this season and its third bowl win in program history, its last being a 45-14 win over Louisiana-Monroe in the Independence Bowl.

The Mountaineers (10-2, 7-1 Sun Belt) are making their first-ever bowl appearance and are the second Sun Belt team (Arkansas State, 2011) to finish a regular season with double-digit wins. Like its opponent, Appalachian State also finished the season with three straight wins and hopes to build off that momentum. Last time out, the Mountaineers came away with a 34-27 win over the South Alabama Jaguars. Appalachian State used a big first half to take control of this one, but South Alabama stormed back with 20 unanswered point to take a 27-24 lead. But the Jags wouldn’t score again as the Mountaineers countered with 10 points of their own to seal the deal. Marcus Cox finished with 192 yards rushing and a receiving touchdown, while Tyler Lamb passed for two scores to lead the offense.

Ohio and Appalachian State will meet for the first time in the history of the two programs in the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl.

Appalachian State is too balanced and too effective offensively. Ohio is sound defensively and should be able to keep this a fight throughout, but the Mountaineer defense will be better in key situations for a big win for the Sun Belt.
