January 1, 2016
Fiesta Bowl recap, score and key stats for the Buckeyes and Fighting Irish.
Prediction: Iowa 27, Stanford 24, Line: Stanford -6.5, o/u: 53
And You Care Because … Michael Thomas caught a 15-yard touchdown pass on the way to a 14-0 Ohio State lead in the first quarter, and never trailed from there. Ezekiel Elliott ran for four touchdowns including a 47-yard dash in the third as the Buckeyes got up 38-21, but Notre Dame kept fighting. The Irish got short touchdown runs from Josh Adams, DeShone Kizer and Chris Brown to hang around, and Will Fuller took a Kizer pass 81 yards for a score in the fourth, but the Buckeyes always had an answer. Sean Nuernberger hit three fourth quarter field goals.
What Else?
– Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott ran 27 times for 149 yards and four scores.
– Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer completed 22-of-37 passes for 284 yards and two scores with a pick, and he ran 15 times for 21 yards and a touchdown.
– Ohio State DE Joey Bosa kicked out of the game for a targeting penalty, Notre Dame LB Jaylon Smith knocked out of the game
– Notre Dame WR Will Fuller caught six passes for 113 yards and a score.
– Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett completed 19-of-31 passes for 211 yards and a score with a pick, and ran 23 times for 96 yards
– Time of Possession: Ohio State 32:45 – Notre Dame 27:15
Game Rating: B. The Jaylon Smith put a damper on the game, and it’s a shame Ohio State didn’t play this well all season long, but it was still decent. Notre Dame got hit with injuries, Ohio State kept pushing all game long, and this turned into a shootout, but this was more of a game between teams wondering what might have been.
