The No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes will travel to Champaign, Ill. to battle the Illinois Fighting Illini in the Battle of the Illibuck Saturday.
The Buckeyes (9-0, 5-0 Big Ten) extended winning streak to 22 games after last week’s 28-14 win over Minnesota. Vonn Bell returned an interception for a touchdown in the second quarter to get the party started for Ohio State as it scored the first 21 points of the game. Cardale Jones played well in place of the suspended J.T. Barrett going 12-of-22, amassing 252 total yards and two touchdowns. Ezekiel Elliott also turned in a nice performance for the Buckeyes, getting 26 carries for 114 yards and a score. The performance extended Elliott’s FBS-leading streak to 14-consecutive games with at least 100 yards rushing. The Buckeyes defense made up for what was a sloppy offensive game, holding the Gophers to just 115 yards of total offense through three quarters and 33 yards rushing.
After dropping three-straight games, the Illini (5-4, 2-3 Big Ten) got some of its confidence back with a much-needed win last week. Illinois rolled over Purdue on the road 48-14 thanks to 100-plus-yard-rushing performances from Ke’Shawn Vaughn (16 car, 180 yards, 2 TD) and Josh Ferguson (12 car, 133 yards). Vaughn’s 180 yards were the most by an Illini freshman since Rocky Harvey in 1998. Illinois torched the Boilermakers for 362 yards on the ground, which was the most for the Illini in a Big Ten game since it ran for 519 yards against Northwestern in 2010. Illinois showed offensive balance by turning in a solid performance through the air as well. Wes Lunt hit on 19 of his 33 passes for 169 yards and tossed three touchdowns to three different receivers.
Ohio State and Illinois have battled for the Illinibuck since 1902, and Saturday’s matchup will mark the 102nd meeting. The Buckeyes hold a 63-23-2 advantage in the series and have won the last six games, including last year’s 55-14 win in Columbus, Ohio.
Below is everything you need to know about the game, including the Ohio State vs. Illinois online live stream, TV broadcast information, game notes and prediction.
This could be a dangerous moment for the Buckeyes. The offense will hum just fine with Barrett under center, and OSU won’t be in any true trouble, but Illinois will make this a close battle to force a little bit of stress.
