Everybody and their brother has weighed in on Michigan’s open spring break practice – from Greg Sankey to Jim McElwain to Jimbo Fisher. Even Urban Meyer pieced together a few quotes to serve up to the blogosphere. Now we can (un)officially put an end to all the fake outrage thanks to Meyer’s boss, Ohio State AD Gene Smith tossing a little shade at Michigan.
Ohio State AD Gene Smith on holding spring practice in Florida: "If we were jump starting our program, I'd probably try to do that too."

Sharp troll job from Smith there, even if not really factual. After all, Ohio State jump-started its post-Jim Tressell, post-free tattoos program by simply hiring the second-best living college football coach away from ESPN. Speaking of, said coach didn’t have a problem with the spring break practices, and dollars to doughnuts we’ll see Ohio State’s coaching staff pimping something similar this time next year. Still, have to love the “count the rings, we run this rivalry” moxie from Mean Gene.
That said, the spring break practice talk has reached the point where we must now kill it with fire. Michigan spent time in Florida, players practiced and partied to the soothing sounds of UB40, recruits got a peek at a grown man who still enjoys climbing trees and holding sleepovers. Loophole exploited. Mission accomplished.
For God’s sake, when Bret Bielema is offering cogent thoughts about satellite camps it’s time to move on. We need next faux controversy to carry us through this long slog of an offseason, and needed it yesterday.
