The No. 14 Notre Dame Fighting Irish will host the USC Trojans in South Bend on Saturday in a rivalry-game featuring two teams heading in opposite directions.

The Battle of the Jeweled Shillelagh dates back to 1926 and Saturday’s matchup will be the 87th meeting between the rivals. Notre Dame leads the all-time series 45-36-5 and holds a 24-14-1 edge when the game is played in South Bend. The Trojans have won 10 of the last 13 meetings, but the Irish have taken three of the last five.

Prediction

On the road … led by an interim coach … the week after falling to Washington. USC is battling too many forces to get out of South Bend with a much-needed win this weekend. Do the Trojans harbor enough talent to defeat Notre Dame? Absolutely. But this is one of those games that transcend the simplicity of unit vs. unit matchups.

The Irish will be better at the line of scrimmage, with Tuerk’s absence being felt immediately. While Kessler will perform heroically for a spell, he’ll eventually succumb under the weight of the pressures and hurries. Prosise and Day will be the offensive and defensive MVPs, respectively, helping earn payback for last November’s five-touchdown loss in the Coliseum.
