The No. 2 North Carolina Tar Heels will travel to South Bend, Ind. to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Saturday in a primetime ACC matchup.

The Tar Heels (19-3, 8-1 ACC) have had time to heal and are ready to bounce back from their first conference loss of the season – a 71-65 defeat at Louisville. The Cardinals led by a single point at the half and kept a steady lead for most of the second frame. The Heels made it interesting late, getting within two points with 35 seconds left. However, two pairs of free throws from Trey Lewis and Damion Lee put the game on ice for Louisville. The Cards had a slight edge on the glass (41-39), but it was their shooting percentage that was key. Louisville connected on 43.3 percent of its shots, while the Heels hit just 34.5 percent. Justin Jackson led UNC with 16 points, while Brice Johnson notched his fourth consecutive double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds).

The Fighting Irish (15-7, 6-4 ACC) finds itself in the middle of the pack in the ACC as it has dropped two of its last three games – most recently a 79-70 defeat at Miami Wednesday night. The Hurricanes led wire-to-wire in this one and never saw their lead dip below nine in the second half. The Irish had the edge on the boards, 35-30 (including 17 offensive rebounds), but couldn’t stop the ‘Canes hot shooting as Miami connected on 56.4 percent of its shot attempts. Bonzie Colson led Notre Dame with 17 points off the bench, while V.J. Beachem (14) and Zach Auguste (12) found themselves in double-figures.

Saturday’s matchup will be the 25th between North Carolina and Notre Dame in the history of the two programs with the Heels leading the all-time series, 18-6. The Irish has won the last two, including last year’s ACC Tournament Final.

    Prediction

Notre Dame seems to always have that signature win at home, but this matchup might not be a candidate. Look, neither of these two teams lose twice in a row and the Irish play very well in South Bend, but North Carolina has too much talent down low. Look for the Kennedy Meeks-Brice Johnson duo to beat up on Zach Auguste and the Irish bigs down low, leaving Marcus Paige and Justin Jackson free to fire away from deep. Demetrius Jackson isn’t 100 percent since his injury and that will hurt Notre Dame. The Irish will give ’em all it has, but the Heels squeak out a win in South Bend — barely.

    Game Notes

    • Carolina’s assist-to-turnover ratio (1.71) ranks second in the nation and would be the best of any Tar Heel team since turnovers were first recorded in 1981-82.
    • Notre Dame hasn’t lost two straight games since the end of the 2013-14 season, going 12-0 in the game immediately following a defeat.
    • Carolina needs one win to clinch its 57th 20-win season in 106 seasons as a varsity program.
