Chip Kelly's Alabama visit was confirmed by Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin. The two coaches discussed his trip at the national championship game media day.
January 9, 2016Former Oregon and Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly is officially on the open market following his firing by the Eagles. Philadelphia let Kelly go just before the final game of the season.
Kelly has free time on his hands now, and he’s apparently spending some of it in Tuscaloosa, Ala. visiting Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide.
On Saturday, during the national championship game media day in Glendale, Ariz., Saban and Lane Kiffin confirmed the earlier reports and rumors that Kelly had made a trip to Alabama.
Saban, per usual, was tightlipped. According to Alabama beat writer Marq Burnett, Saban stated Kelly is simply a friend, was in the area, and nothing of real significance pertained to the upcoming title game.
While Saban portrayed Kelly’s visit as just a passing, Kiffin eluded to it being a little bit more, at least for him.
“It was good to spend some time with him and bring him in and get some different ideas,” Kiffin said (per Brett McMurphy).
Kiffin and Kelly are widely regarded as two of the top offensive minds in all of football.
Kelly’s future is currently up in the air. Whether he’ll stick in the NFL or make a jump back to college remains to be seen. Although, the former route appears more likely at this time.
He did lead Philadelphia to 10-6 finishes in his first two years, but the Eagles took a step back this past season with a 6-9 record before being dismissed. Kelly had the final say over the 53-man roster, which ultimately played a role in his demise in Philadelphia.
