Alabama head coach Nick Saban had to pay up after losing a bet to Clemson’s Dabo Swinney. Could another friendly wager be on the horizon?

Not only was Nick Saban unable to claim another national title this past January, but the loss put a dent in his pocketbook as well.

The Alabama head coach had to buy Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney a dinner after losing a friendly wager that the two had made prior to their College Football Playoff national championship game rematch. The Tigers’ 35-31 win gave the program its first national title since the 1981 season.

“Absolutely, he paid up on my spring break,” Swinney told Mark Packer on College Sports Today on Friday. “His spring break was the week before mine. He got me a really nice dinner certificate to a place called Temptation down in Florida. We had a great—probably the best meal I’ve ever had. It was awesome. We had appetizers and dessert to go with it. It was great. I did have to dip into my pocket for 50 bucks, though, but it was all good.”

The wager was also a rematch from the previous season, when the two head coaches made a similar bet before Alabama’s victory over Clemson to close out the 2015 campaign. After a St. Patrick’s Day dinner cruise, Swinney bought Saban a gift certificate to live up to his side of the bargain.

Could there be a third opportunity for the pair to make a wager? While Alabama and Clemson both lose some key pieces from their 2016 teams, both programs still have the star power and depth to meet in a third consecutive CFP title game.
