Hawaii hires Nick Rolovich as its new head coach

Nevada offensive coordinator and former Hawaii quarterback Nick Rolovich was hired to take over the program and try to bring back the attack.
Norm Chow was a right fit guy in theory, but Rolovich should be the actual right fit head coach to make the program’s offense start to crank it up like the June Jones days.
Jones was reportedly under consideration to take back the gig he held from 1999 to 2007 – before leaving for SMU following a 23-4 run and a Sugar Bowl appearance in his last two seasons. But Rolovich is the younger option who knows the program, knows how to get an offense going, and knows what it takes to succeed under a unique circumstances as the Rainbow Warrior head man.
But he’s got a lot of work to do.
Hawaii is 120th in the nation in total offense, 121st in scoring offense with the passing game hitting the skids after starting to produce two years ago – even though the team went 1-11.
Chow will always be remembered as a coaching legend for what he did at USC, with Phil Rivers at North Carolina State, and at BYU with Steve Young and a slew of statistical superstars, but his offenses were a disaster at Hawaii and his teams never turned the corner during his 10-36 run going into the season finale against ULM.
But here’s the concern. Nevada is 113th in the nation in passing this year in an inefficient offense that runs well enough, but isn’t exactly lighting it up.
Even so, the 36-year-old Rolovich is considered a good young coach, and he’s a tie back to the days when 500-yard passing days weren’t that out of the norm for the program.
And he’s a favorite in the coaching community.
“This is a well-deserved opportunity for Nick and his wonderful family,” in a statement from Nevada head coach Brian Polian. “We will miss him professionally, but even more so as a person. UH made a great decision.”
Rolovich is best known for ruining BYU’s dream 2001 season with 543-yard, eight touchdown game to trample all over the 12-0 Cougars, but now he needs to restore the glory. At the very least, he needs to restore the passing game.
