NFL Mock Draft 2.0: First Round After Key Free Agency Signings

NFL Mock Draft 2.0. Here's how things look following key free agency signings. Laremy Tunsil is still projected to go No. 1, but who follows him now?

    March 11, 2016

It’s game on in NFL free agency, drastically changing around the needs for several teams and throwing the NFL mock drafts into a tailspin. There’s still more to come, but after the big signings, how does the draft look now?

    1. Tennessee Titans

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Offensive Tackle, 2) Running Back, 3) Defensive Back
Key Free Agent Signing: WR Rishard Matthews

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: OT Laremy Tunsil, Ole Miss

The Titans have their quarterback, they gave Marcus Mariota another receiver in Matthews, and they gave him a franchise running back in DeMarco Murray to take the heat off, now everything is in place – except for a tremendous left tackle. Tunsil is the easy choice.

    2. Cleveland Browns

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Quarterback, 2) Defensive Tackle, 3) Linebacker
Key Free Agent Signing: LB Tank Carder

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: QB Carson Wentz, North Dakota State

The Browns might be toying around with the idea of taking one of the elite defensive linemen, or moving down to stockpile picks, but they need a quarterback. They also need a new receiver after losing Travis Benjamin. They also need help for the offensive line after losing C Alex Mack to Atlanta and OT Mitchell Schwartz to Kansas City – they’ll have to load up in the later rounds now to give Wentz or Jared Goff more help.

    3. San Diego Chargers

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Defensive End, 2) Wide Receiver, 3) Defensive Back
Key Free Agent Signing: WR Travis Benjamin

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: CB/S Jalen Ramsey, Florida State

The Chargers got help at safety with FS Dwight Lowery coming in, and they kept around TE Antonio Gates. Defensive end is a must, and Joey Bosa and DeForest Buckner will be right there, but Ramsey is the do-it-all defensive back to work the rebuilding secondary around.

    4. Dallas Cowboys

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Running Back, 2) Quarterback, 3) Linebacker
Key Free Agent Signing: DE Cedric Thornton

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: DE Joey Bosa, Ohio State

The Cowboys will address the running back situation later on, and they’ll get a backup quarterback to groom behind Tony Romo, but if they don’t go for LB Myles Jack. Keeping around Rolando McClain will help, though. They’ll take the big-time end in Bosa – or Oregon’s DeForest Buckner – to go along with free agent signing, Cedric Thornton.

    5. Jacksonville Jaguars

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Defensive Back, 2) Linebacker, 3) Offensive Line
Key Free Agent Signing: DE Malik Jackson

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: LB Myles Jack, UCLA

It might have been tempting to beef up the D line if Joey Bosa and/or DeForest Buckner was there, but breaking the bank to sign Malik Jackson changes that up. Going after Jalen Ramsey – if he’s still there – doesn’t matter as much after signing Tashaun Gipson, so they can take Myles Jack as the tone-setting linebacker to work behind a stronger-looking line.

    6. Baltimore Ravens

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Offensive Tackle, 2) Wide Receiver, 3) Cornerback
Key Free Agent Signing: CB Shareece Wright

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: OT Ronnie Stanley, Notre Dame

The Ravens needed an offensive lineman before free agency, and now they lost top OG Kelechi Osemele – taking Ronnie Stanley should be a slam dunk. However, even after resigning Shareece Wright, Vernon Hargreaves might still be an option.

    7. San Francisco 49ers

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Quarterback, 2) Wide Receiver, 3) Defensive Tackle
Key Free Agent Signing: DT Ian Williams

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: QB Jared Goff, Cal

With Colin Kaepernick expected to be all but gone – and even if he stays – Chip Kelly will go with Jared Goff or Carson Wentz, depending on which one is still around. Signing Thad Lewis is nothing more than a free agent insurance policy.

    8. Philadelphia Eagles, in trade with Miami

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Offensive Line, 2) Quarterback, 3) Defensive End
Key Free Agent Signing: DE Cedrick Thornton

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: RB Ezekiel Elliott, Ohio State

There was no need to make the move up to take an OT like Jack Conklin or Taylor Decker. There’s no need to take a running back early, unless you don’t really have a good one. There are some phenomenal defensive ends on the board, but after signing Cedrick Thornton, Elliott should be a franchise-changing pick.

    9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Three Team Needs Prior To Free Agency: 1) Offensive Line, 2) Cornerback, 3) Defensive End
Key Free Agent Signing: RB Doug Martin

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: DE DeForest Buckner, Oregon

The Buccaneers opened up the checkbook to keep Doug Martin around, but they need more offensive linemen and could use a corner like Vernon Hargreaves. Buckner lasting this long is a steal here.

    10. New York Giants

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Running Back, 2) Defensive End, 3) Offensive Tackle

Key Free Agent Signing: DE Olivier Vernon

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: CB Vernon Hargreaves, Florida

Before free agency, Kevin Dodd or Shaq Lawson would’ve been a lock. After signing Jason Pierre-Paul, Damon Harrison, and giving Olivier Vernon a ton of guaranteed money, that’s not happening now at the ten. With Ezekiel Elliott likely gone, forget about taking a running back.

    11. Chicago Bears

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Defensive End, 2) Wide Receiver, 3) Defensive Back
Key Free Agent Signing: LB Danny Trevathan

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: DE Shaq Lawson, Clemson

Is Lawson the exact right fit for the Bear D? Sort of, but linebacker is no longer a pressing need after signing Danny Trevathan, and the offensive line got some help with tackle Bobby Massie. The Bears could go the Best Player Available route, and defensive tackle is a need, but Lawson is good value pick.

    12. New Orleans Saints

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Quarterback, 2) Defensive Tackle, 3) Defensive Back
Key Free Agent Signing: TE Coby Fleener

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: DT Sheldon Rankins, Louisville

You think the Saints wanted to improve the tight end situation? They resigned Ben Watson and picked up Coby Fleener. They still need a young quarterback, but they’ll have their pick of defensive tackles. Rankins or A’Shawn Robinson are different types of tackles they’ll be able to pick from.

    13. Miami Dolphins, in trade with Philadelphia

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Offensive Line, 2) Cornerback, 3) Linebacker
Key Free Agent Signing: DE Mario Williams

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: OT Jack Conklin, Michigan State

After losing Lamar Miller, now what are the Dolphins going to do at running back? They’ll have to wait until a wee bit later in the draft, and they’ll be mad that Vernon Hargreaves isn’t on the board. It’ll be tempting to take one of the elite receivers, but keeping QB Ryan Tannehill safe is Priority One – they’ll go with an offensive tackle.

    14. Oakland Raiders

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Defensive Back, 2) Linebacker, 3) Defensive Tackle

Key Free Agent Signing: OG Kelechi Osemele

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: DT A’Shawn Robinson, Alabama

Active in free agency, the Raiders added an athletic linebacker in Bruce Irvin, a big corner in Sean Smith, and a terrific guard in Kelechi Osemele to make an instant impact. Two of the needs were addressed, but they still need a big thumper on the line to work around. A’Shawn Robinson could be the anchor.

    15. Los Angeles Rams

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Quarterback, 2) Wide Receiver, 3) Cornerback
Key Free Agent Signing: S/LB Mark Barron

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: QB Paxton Lynch, Memphis

The Rams have to do it. This might be too early for Lynch, and he’s hardly the perfect quarterback prospect, but the franchise desperately need a new start to build around. They resigned some average free agents and lost CB Janoris Jenkins and FS Rodney McLeod, so defensive back will be a need at some point. Clemson’s Mackenzi Alexander is an option, but Lynch is taking a chance on greatness.

    16. Detroit Lions

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Offensive Tackle, 2) Cornerback, 3) Defensive Tackle

Key Free Agent Signing: WR Marvin Jones

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: WR Corey Coleman, Baylor

Losing Calvin Johnson and getting Marvin Jones isn’t a fair swap. The Lions need more firepower and need more young receivers, and it’ll be a toss-up between Corey Coleman and Laquon Treadwell. They’ll go with the speed.

    17. Atlanta Falcons

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Defensive Back, 2) Defensive End, 3) Linebacker

Key Free Agent Signing: C Alex Mack

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: LB Reggie Ragland, Alabama

Resigning Adrian Clayborn provides a little help to the D line, and getting DE Derrick Shelby is a big help. Now the Falcons can pass on Clemson’s Kevin Dodd, and they can bring in a pounding inside linebacker in Ragland to work the defense around.

    18. Indianapolis Colts

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Offensive Tackle, 2) Defensive Back, 3) Running Back

Key Free Agent Signing: TE Dwayne Allen

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: OT Taylor Decker, Ohio State

Not all that active in free agency over the first few days, the Colts should be relatively set without any glaring needs. Upgrading the offensive tackle situation would be nice.

    19. Buffalo Bills

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Defensive Tackle, 2) Quarterback, 3) Offensive Tackle

Key Free Agent Signing: OG Richie Incognito

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: DT Robert Nkemdiche, Ole Miss

After losing Mario Williams, Clemson’s Kevin Dodd will be tempting, and Alabama’s Jarran Reed would be easy to fill in, but it’s Rex Ryan – he’s going to go for it. Nkemdiche is a chance being taken on greatness.

    20. New York Jets

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Linebacker, 2) Quarterback, 3) Offensive Tackle

Key Free Agent Signing: RB Matt Forte

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: LB Darron Lee, Ohio State

Lose Chris Ivory, resign Bilal Powell and bring in Matt Forte and Khiry Robinson – there’s no need to deal with running back. Quarterback could be a possibility if Paxton Lynch is still here, but it’s going to come down to the top linebackers on the board. Georgia’s Leonard Floyd is a possibility, and Noah Spence would be the WOW pick, but Lee makes a whole bunch of sense.

    21. Washington Redskins

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Defensive Line, 2) Wide Receiver, 3) Offensive Line

Key Free Agent Signing: LB Mason Foster

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: DE Noah Spence, Eastern Kentucky

Alright, Washington – you like that. You’ve got your quarterback in Kirk Cousins, but there haven’t been any free agent signings of note – and no, Colt McCoy doesn’t count. Noah Spence might not have Von Miller athleticism and speed, but he’s a good value pick here.

    22. Houston Texans

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Quarterback, 2) Running Back, 3) Defensive Tackle

Key Free Agent Signing: QB Brock Osweiler

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: WR Laquon Treadwell, Ole Miss

Well this changes all previous projections. The Texans needed a quarterback, and they pay off Brock Osweiler. They needed a running back, and in comes Lamar Miller from Miami. There’s a reason Laquon Treadwell is going to fall – his lack of raw wheels. That’s okay paired next to DeAndre Hopkins. Now Bill O’Brien has a slew of weapons to work with.

    23. Minnesota Vikings

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Wide Receiver, 2) Offensive Line, 3) Linebacker

Key Free Agent Signing: OG Alex Boone

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: WR Will Fuller, Notre Dame

It might not be sexy, but OG Alex Boone from San Francisco was a really, really nice get. At least one of the top receivers will still be on the board, and the speed and flash of Fuller would be exactly what the Vikings need to give Teddy Bridgewater a bit more help.

    24. Cincinnati Bengals

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Defensive Tackle, 2) Safety, 3) Offensive Line

Key Free Agent Signing: SS George Iloka

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: LB Leonard Floyd, Georgia

After losing Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu, all of a sudden, wide receiver becomes a need at some point. Resigning George Iloka was a must, but now they need help for the line. Could Louisiana Tech’s Vernon Butler be the fit here? Not with a pass rusher in Leonard Floyd there for the taking.

    25. Pittsburgh Steelers

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Defensive Back, 2) Linebacker, 3) Offensive Line

Key Free Agent Signing: TE Ladarius Green

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: CB Mackenzi Alexander, Clemson

Lose TE Heath Miller to retirement, sign Ladarius Green and hope he can finally turn into the playmaker he was expected to grow into at San Diego. There should be a slew of good corner options on the board, and Alexander would be fantastic steal this low.

    26. Seattle Seahawks

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Running Back, 2) Defensive Tackle, 3) Cornerback

Key Free Agent Signing: WR Jermaine Kearse

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: DT Jarran Reed, Alabama

With Bruce Irvin off to Oakland, finding a hybrid pass rusher like Darron Lee, Leonard Floyd or Noah Spence would be nice, but they’ll all be gone. It’s too early to overpay for a running back, so jumping all over a tackle in Reed – or Robert Nkemdiche, depending on which one goes first – would be a need pick at the right time.

    27. Green Bay Packers

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Defensive Line, 2) Offensive Line, 3) Tight End

Key Free Agent Signing: LB Nick Perry

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: DT Andrew Billings, Baylor

Done. Others might be thinking about Billings, but the Packers need a defensive tackle, and they should have the big guy from Baylor right there for the grabbing. It could be A’Shawn Robinson or Vernon Butler if either one is here and Billings is gone.

    28. Kansas City Chiefs

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Offensive Line, 2) Wide Receiver, 3) Defensive Line

Key Free Agent Signing: WR Josh Doctson, TCU

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: DE Jonathan Bullard, Florida

The Chiefs did a terrific job in the first few days of free agency, solving the offensive tackle problem with Mitchell Schwartz coming in from Cleveland, and resigning Derrick Johnson, Tamba Hali and Jay Howard for the defensive front. That leaves them wide open to take the best receiver available.

    29. Arizona Cardinals

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Linebacker, 2) Quarterback, 3) Defensive End

Key Free Agent Signing: CB Tyvon Branch

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: DE Kevin Dodd, Clemson

This will be the one big slide of the first round. Dodd has top 15 talent, but he doesn’t really fit a need or a spot for most teams. Arizona will run its ticket up to the podium. Not all that active in free agency, and only losing OT Bobby Massie and LB Sean Weatherspoon, getting Dodd would be a dream.

    30. Carolina Panthers

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Wide Receiver, 2) Offensive Tackle, 3) Defensive End

Key Free Agent Signing: DE Charles Johnson

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: CB Eli Apple, Ohio State

Not all that active so far in free agency, there isn’t any one area that’s getting hit hard or being addressed. Getting Kelvin Benjamin back upgrades the receiving corps, and there are a few good defensive ends to think about, but resigning Charles Johnson helps that. Adding more corner help is easy with Eli Apple still around.

    31. Denver Broncos

The Team Needs Prior To Free Agency … 1) Offensive Line, 2) Running Back, 3) Tight End

Key Free Agent Signing: OT Donald Stephenson

NFL Mock Draft 2.0 Pick: QB Connor Cook, Michigan State

Really? Colin Kaepernick is going to be the guy who keeps it all going? Losing Brock Osweiler stings, but the departure of DE Malik Jackson and LB Danny Trevathan is the real killer. John Elway might do both – get a free agent quarterback like Kaepernick or Robert Griffin III, and also pick up a feisty option in Cook for the future.
