New Mexico and New Mexico State will be renewing a rivalry that began in 1894 when they meet Saturday in Albuquerque. The Lobos, who are coming off a win at Wyoming, have taken three in a row in this emotional instate series. The Aggies, on the other hand, are one of seven FBS programs still looking for their first win.
The Aggies have been close in their last two games, falling by five combined points to Georgia State and UTEP. The offense has not been an issue. RB Larry Rose is off to another great start, while QB Tyler Rogers to receivers Teldrick Morgan and Tyrian Taylor will stretch the field on the Lobos.
The Aggie offense brings hope. But the D brings doubt. New Mexico State, which has allowed 48 points per game, will be on its heels against the Lobo ground game. New Mexico ranks No. 15 nationally in rushing, buoyed by athletic QB Lamar Jordan and the one-two punch of Jhurell Presley and Teriyon Gipson.
Bob Davie’s Lobo D loves to attack, already racking up a Mountain West-high 33 stops for minus yards. Most of the pressure is coming from the second level, where Dakota Cox, Kimmie Carson and Donnie White will come hard and fast at Rose and Rogers.
New Mexico can create momentum-shifting plays with its defense. New Mexico State, to the contrary, will struggle with the methodical Lobo ground assault. It’ll be competitive until early in the third quarter, when New Mexico pulls away for its fourth straight in the rivalry.
