The Nevada Wolf Pack will host the San Jose State Spartans on Saturday in a critical matchup as both teams are tied for second place in the Mountain West Conference’s West Division.
The Wolf Pack (5-4, 3-2 MW) has won back-to-back games for the first time this season, knocking off Fresno State 30-16 last week and Hawaii 30-20 before that . Fresno State scored a touchdown but missed the point-after-touchdown attempt to bring itself within a point before halftime. Nevada scored 13 unanswered points in the second half, though, to secure the win. The running attack of Don Jackson (21 car, 140 yards) and James Butler (18 car, 122 yards, TD) helped seal the win against the Bulldogs. Wide receiver Hasaan Henderson recorded a career-high 136 yards receiving and added a touchdown. In addition to shutting out Fresno State in the second half, the Nevada defense stepped up in the turnover category as well. Dameon Baber intercepted three passes in the fourth quarter, matching a conference record. Baber became the ninth player in MW history — second this season — to intercept three passes in a single game.
The Spartans (4-5, 3-2 MW) are looking to bounce back from a tough loss last week. They fell 17-16 in a nail biter to Brigham Young. San Jose State rallied in the fourth quarter with a six-yard touchdown run from Kenny Potter, but the Spartans elected to go for the win on a two-point conversion and failed. BYU was effective keeping Spartans running back Tyler Eavin to 80 yards rushing — well below his 137.7 average per game. The San Jose State defense turned in a solid performance, highlighted by Cleveland Wallace III’s 61-yard-interception return for a touchdown right before the half, which kept the game close and gave the Spartans some momentum.
Nevada and San Jose State will match up for the 29th time Saturday. The Wolf Pack leads the all-time series 18-8-2.
