Nebraska Cornhuskers’ quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. was taken off the field on a stretcher in the second quarter of Saturday night’s game at Ohio State.

A scary situation unfolded Saturday night in Columbus as Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. was taken off the field on a stretcher in the Cornhuskers’ matchup with Ohio State.

Armstrong carried the ball near the sidelines in the second quarter and was knocked out of bounds. When he landed, Armstrong hit his head directly on the ground and lay motionless. Trainers from both teams rolled him over and used scissors to cut off his jersey and shoulder pads before being placed on a stretcher.

Armstrong’s father and fiance rushed to his side on the field and followed the motorized cart that brought Armstrong into an ambulance. Armstrong gave a thumbs up as he was loaded onto the cart, and teammates came by to offer him well wishes. Fans in the crowd chanted his name.

There was no immediate word on the specifics of the injury, but ESPN sideline reporter Sam Ponder reported she heard that there was concern that Armstrong landing on the football could’ve caused a problem.

Armstrong is a senior who has guided Nebraska to a 7-1 record and the No. 10 spot in the College Football Playoff rankings entering the game against Ohio State.

Senior Ryker Fyfe replaced Armstrong with roughly five minutes left in the second quarter. He’s appeared in 13 games over four years with seven touchdowns and five interceptions, with his most action coming in the 2015 season.

    UPDATE

Nebraska has released a statement on Armstrong’s condition:
