February 9, 2017Veteran assistant coach Bob Elliott is expected to leave Notre Dame and join the Nebraska staff to coach safeties under new defensive coordinator Bob Diaco, according to reports.
It appears new Nebraska defensive coordinator Bob Diaco is bringing in a familiar face to join his staff.
Reports state that the Cornhuskers will hire veteran assistant Bob Elliott to fill the safeties coach opening. Elliott has spent the past two seasons as special assistant to Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly.
Elliott also coached safeties for the Fighting Irish in 2012 and ’13, when Diaco was the Irish’s defensive coordinator before leaving to take the head coaching job at UConn. Diaco went 11-26 with one bowl appearance in three seasons with the Huskies and was fired after going 3-9 this past year.
Reuniting at Nebraska should be a natural fit. Elliott was an assistant at Iowa when Diaco played linebacker for the Hawkeyes from 1992-95 and also when Diaco became a graduate assistant at the school in 1996 and ’97.
Elliott had high praise for Diaco following the latter being hired at Nebraska, telling the Omaha World-Herald at the time that the Huskers were getting the best defensive coordinator in the country.
“He has a plan, and his personality and intensity is irresistible,” Elliott told the World-Herald. “I think the guys on the team are going to really enjoy playing for him. Great motivator, great energy, and they’ll have fun playing for him, too. He makes sure that’s part of the deal.”
Elliott would replace Brian Stewart, who left to become the defensive coordinator at Rice.
