NCAA Tournament: Sweet 16 East Region

Who’s going to win each Sweet 16 game of the NCAA Tournament? Here are the Fearless Predictions for every game.

How are the predictions so far?

East Region: 11-3 SU, 10-3-1 ATS

No. 1 North Carolina (30-6) vs. No. 5 Indiana (27-5)

Why North Carolina Will Win: When the Tar Heels turned it on against Providence – especially on the boards – it was over. They’re fully playing up to their preseason No. 1 level on the move offensively and with the defense clamping down hard over the last four games – they haven’t allowed more than 67 points against Notre Dame, Virginia, FGCU and Providence. Indiana was able to win in a fight against Kentucky, but it lives on a high-powered offense. North Carolina can not only keep up the pace, but also slow it down when needed.

Why Indiana Will Win: The Hoosiers have the inside presence to combat the UNC big men up front on the boards. Indiana can shoot from the outside as well as anyone in the country – North Carolina can’t. If IU can control the interior, keep up in any sort of a fast-paced game – it’s preferred mode – it shouldn’t have a problem keeping the pressure on from three. IU is fifth in the nation in three-point shooting, North Carolina is 303rd.

What’s Going To Happen: With Michigan State out, North Carolina and Indiana – along with Kansas – are looking like the sharp front-runners to beat. Indiana might have more options and weapons, but North Carolina is playing too well and too strong. This will be a phenomenal war.

    Line: North Carolina -5.5

Prediction: North Carolina 81, Indiana 74

No. 6 Notre Dame (23-11) vs. No. 7 Wisconsin (23-12)

Why Notre Dame Will Win: There were times in both of Wisconsin’s tournament games where a little run from the other side late would’ve ended it. Pitt had several chances, and Xavier did, too. This isn’t going to be a blowout either way, and if the Irish can go on an 8-0 run late, Wisconsin won’t have the ability to keep up – three-point gunning and all. Bronson Koenig’s heroics aside, the Badgers don’t have much of an outside game.

Why Wisconsin Will Win: Notre Dame doesn’t come up with steals, and Wisconsin doesn’t really pass well – the Badgers won’t be pressured enough into errors. Stephen F. Austin was only forced into six turnovers, and considering Wisconsin doesn’t beat itself, it’s not going to give away many easy buckets. This might not be a great shooting team, but it’ll get its share of offensive rebounds.

What’s Going To Happen: Wisconsin defies all logic and reason. This isn’t a good enough team to beat Pitt and Xavier the way it did. Notre Dame has the right make-up to make this another grinder of a game, but the Badgers are better at getting into a mucky battle.

    Line: Notre Dame -2

Prediction: Wisconsin 68, Notre Dame 66
