Week 11 NCAA basketball rankings for the 2015-16 season. Oklahoma's loss to Kansas might knock it out of the top three, and North Carolina looks for a return to the top five.
January 18, 2016Oklahoma may have fell to Kansas in a triple-overtime defeat, but the Sooners are technically better by proxy, right? They beat West Virginia, and the Mountaineers took down Kansas.
The Jayhawks did beat TCU on Saturday, but it won’t be enough to keep them at the top of the rankings.
Clemson has been playing some great basketball lately — better than most. The Tigers have beaten three AP Top 25 teams in the past two weeks, including wins over two top-10 teams in Duke and Miami.
Speaking of the Hurricanes, Miami had a rough week, losing on the road to Virginia and Clemson, which knocked the Hurricanes down a few spots.
Let’s take a look at how the power rankings shape out this week.
Buddy Hield’s team is finally ready to be the No. 1 team in the country. Oklahoma has won three games in a row since losing that three-overtime thriller to Kansas. The Sooners picked up wins over Oklahoma State and West Virginia, who beat the Jayhawks this past week.
The Jayhawks may have snuck past Oklahoma, but they couldn’t get past West Virginia, who took down Kansas, 74-63, on Tuesday. Bill Self’s team bounced back with a 70-63 win over TCU on Saturday.
The Terrapins might have dropped their second game of the season with a road loss to Michigan on Tuesday, 70-67, but Maryland still has one of the best backcourts with Melo Trimble and Rasheed Sulaimon.
Roy Williams’ Tar Heels are finally playing up to par with being the preseason No. 1 team. Brice Johnson has been playing excellent basketball, and North Carolina has won nine games in a row because of him.
Since Denzel Valentine went down with a knee injury late last month, things just haven’t seemed right for the Spartans. Michigan State is now 3-e in its last six games after starting the season out 13-0. More importantly, the Spartans are 3-3 in Big Ten play. A 76-59 loss to Iowa and a 77-76 loss to Wisconsin were their latest bumps in the road.
The Musketeers’ winning streak is back up to four games after their 12-0 start was ruined by Villanova. Xavier picked up double-digits wins against DePaul Tuesday and Marquette on Saturday.
If we were going to guess who would have a 16-0 record almost three weeks into January, not many would have picked SMU. The Mustangs took down East Carolina, 79-55, on Wednesday and matched it with a 60-45 win over Tulane on Sunday.
The Wildcats have rattled off eight straight wins, and they’ve compiled a 6-0 record against Big East opponents in the process. Villanova topped Marquette, 83-68, and then it took down Georgetown on the road, 55-50.
The Aggies are at the top of the SEC with a 5-0 conference record. Texas A&M beat Florida at home and Georgia on the road — both by double digits. The win against the Bulldogs was particularly impressive, as the Aggies won by 34.
The Hawkeyes picked up one of their most surprising wins of the season by beating Michigan State, 76-59, on Thursday. That win stacked up Iowa’s winning streak to six games, while improving its conference record to 4-0.
