The No. 21 Navy Midshipmen will take on the Pittsburgh Panthers in Annapolis on Dec. 28 for the Military Bowl.

The Midshipmen (10-2, 7-1 AAC) are appearing in their fourth straight bowl game and 21st overall. Navy had a strong first season as a member of the American Athletic Conference with its highest win total since 2009. The Mids were able to cap off the 2015 regular season with a 21-17 win in the annual Army-Navy game. The Black Knights came out of the gate playing well and took a 17-14 lead into halftime, but the Midshipmen took the lead back on a 50-yard TD pass from Keenan Reynolds to Jamir Tillman and shut out Army in the second half for the win. Reynolds tore up another defense as he accounted for 249 total yards and three touchdowns. Reynolds also became apart of college football history as he scored his 85th career touchdown on his second rushing score of the game, the most by any Division I player. He’s also the first quarterback to go 4-0 against Army, while head coach Ken Niumatalolo improved to 8-0 against the Black Knights. Navy is looking for its third straight bowl win after defeating Middle Tennessee in the Armed Forces Bowl in 2013 and San Diego State in the Poinsettia Bowl last year.

The Panthers (8-4, 6-2 ACC) are in the postseason for the eighth straight time after a successful first season under Pat Narduzzi. Pittsburgh was unable to complete a three-game win streak to end the regular season as it fell to the Miami Hurricanes, 29-24. Miami got out to a 23-3 lead going into halftime and Pittsburgh would push to make it close, but didn’t have enough. Nathan Peterman passed for 142 yards and accounted for two total touchdowns, while Darrin Hall took 12 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown. In a game where both teams were fairly even, turnovers and time of possession proved to be the difference. The Hurricanes held the ball 10 minutes longer and forced two turnovers without giving up the ball. Pittsburgh is looking for its first bowl win since 2013 when it defeated Bowling Green, 30-27, in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.

The 2015 Military Bowl will be the 40th meeting between Navy and Pittsburgh with the Panthers leading the series, 22-14-3. Navy won the last meeting, 24-21, in Annapolis in 2013.

    Prediction

The Panthers and the Mids are similar teams with similar personalities, so forget about either one pulling away and coasting to a victory. This will be a grind-it-out type of a game in which the backs—and Reynolds—dictate the tempo. In the end, as good as Pitt has been on the road in 2015, Navy has been even better at home. And the Midshipmen aren’t about to suffer their first loss of the year in Annapolis in the final game of Reynolds’ memorable career.

    Game Notes

    • The Midshipmen would set a record for wins in a season with 11, with a win over Pitt.
    • Pitt’s JordanWhitehead became the first defensive player to be named the ACC overall Rookie of the Year since Dre Bly of North Carolina in 1996.
    • Dating back to last year, Navy has won 16 of its last 19 games with losses against nationally-ranked programs Notre Dame twice and at Houston on Nov. 27.
