Navy football is putting together one of the best season's in program and service academy history.
November 20, 2015When service academy football teams come to mind, you think of the Army-Navy game, the courageous backstories of many of the athletes, and impressive displays of patriotism by uniformed spectators in the crowd.
One thing that doesn’t cross your mind is a nationally prominent football team. But at 8-1, the Navy Midshipmen are on the verge of having the best season for a service academy this millennium.
If Navy wins out the rest of the way and finishes with only one loss, the Midshipmen will end up with the best season for a service academy since 1998, when Air Force went 12-1. It would be the Naval Academy’s best season since 1957.
While the Midshipmen are three regular season games, a conference title game, and a bowl win away from completing that feat, it’s important to consider the plausibility of such a finish.
Navy has won four straight, by an average of nearly 24 points a game, most recently beating American Athletic Conference bottom-dweller SMU by 41. The Midshipmen have all the momentum in the world headed into this week’s game against a .500 Tulsa team — a matchup they’re favored to win by 12 points.
The regular-season finale is a date against Army, a team Navy has beaten 13 years in a row. The Black Knights are also in the midst of a brutal season at 2-8.
The clear remaining hurdle is the Houston Cougars, who currently lead the conference at 10-0. But even with perfect record, Houston comes in three slots below Navy in this week’s College Football Playoff poll. The reason? Navy has looked like the better team. Every game they’ve won has been by double digits and their only loss came on the road at Notre Dame.
In a college football world dominated by the usual suspects, and big money, it’s fun to watch a service academy put together an uber successful season like Navy.
