January 28, 2017As National Signing Day draws to a close, there are a few teams faltering. Here are some schools that could slide down the 2017 recruiting class rankings as the cycle winds down.
The end is near. The 2017 recruiting class is all but written in stone as National Signing Day is set for Wednesday.
There are plenty of teams hoping to pick up the pace and sprinkle a few more commits into their classes with some hope of climbing up the final recruiting class rankings.
And while some schools are looking to finish on a high note, there are others who are simply trying to hold their ground and keep their classes intact. It won’t be easy, though, as recruits are already starting to flip here and there.
So, with that said, here are some teams to keep an eye on, as they could slide down the rankings between now and National Signing Day.
These next few days are going to be extremely hectic for most teams, and that especially rings true for the Terrapins. D.J. Durkin is trying to fend off his former team, Florida, as the Gators are trying to poach three players from Maryland.
Four-star defensive tackle Cam Spence loves the academics Florida offers, but if the Terps hire a defensive line coach to his liking, he’ll likely honor his pledge.
It’s a different story for 4-star defensive tackle Breyon Gaddy and his brother, Brandon Gaddy, a 3-star defensive tackle. If their grades check out, and they get accepted by admissions, the Gaddy brothers will likely be bound for Gainesville.
Will Muschamp picked up the cornerstone of the Gamecocks’ 2017 class in August when 4-star cornerback Jamyest Williams committed to South Carolina. But now Muschamp has to worry about his alma mater trying to flip Williams away from the Gamecocks.
Kirby Smart and his staff have made it a point to keep the in-state talent exactly that … in-state talent. Williams is out of Loganville, Georgia and attends Grayson High School. It’ll be difficult for South Carolina to hang on to Williams’ pledge, and if it can’t, the Gamecocks could fall.
When it comes to the Tigers, there aren’t many recruits threatening to flip their commitments. Still, Gus Malzahn’s team could see a drop in the class rankings by simply not closing for a few recruits.
If Auburn is unable to land 4-star defensive ends Markaviest Bryant and Ryan Johnson, it will risk getting passed by in the class rankings by teams looking to cap off the cycle with multiple commitments.
If the Tigers swing and miss on 4-star linebacker Tyler Taylor and 3-star defensive tackle Noah Eliss, the effect will be intensified.
