March 8, 2016The final game of the 2016 Mountain West Tournament’s opening round is a battle between the No. 6 seed Colorado State Rams and the No. 11 San Jose State Spartans at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
The Rams (16-15, 8-10 MW) put an end to a two-game skid by taking down the Air Force Falcons 87-73 in Fort Collins on Saturday. John Gillon was a perfect 10-for-10 from the line and finished with a game-high 22 points in the win.
The Spartans (9-21, 4-14 MW) ended their regular season with a 68-63 upset win over Boise State Saturday, which ended six-game losing streak. Both teams fought back-and-forth all night with multiple lead changes, but San Jose State took the lead for good with six minutes left, thanks to a 13-2 run. The Broncos pulled within three points late, but were held scoreless for the rest of the game. The Spartans held the Broncos to 37.9 percent shooting from the field, including a dismal 10.5 percent from deep. Brandon Clarke poured in a game-high 21 points for San Jose State in 33 minutes off the bench.
Wednesday’s matchup will be the third of the season between UNLV and Air Force, with the Rebels lead the series 33-12. It’s the rubber game in the season set and the winner will take on Fresno State in the next round.
Below is everything you need to know about the matchup, including the Colorado State vs. San Jose State prediction, online live stream, and game notes.
San Jose State comes into this one with some confidence after its win over Boise State, but can the Spartans keep the magic going in Las Vegas? Not likely.
Colorado State features one of the better backcourts in the conference with Antwan Scott and John Gillon. Expect these two to make plays on both ends of the court and wreak havoc on San Jose State all game long. Emmanuel Omogbo has been a steady force in the post for CSU, he’ll make his presence known down low and on the glass. The Spartans will show a lot of heart, but the Rams are the better team here and live to play another game.
