January 2, 2017Four-star linebacker Monty Rice flipped his commitment from the LSU Tigers to the Georgia Bulldogs on Monday. UGA currently has the nation’s No. 2-ranked recruiting class.
Well Kirby Smart’s 2017 is off to a blistering start. On Sunday, January 1, Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs landed commitments from 5-star athlete DeAngelo Gibbs and 4-star athlete Tray Bishop. Both are out of the Peach State, with Gibbs now being the top-ranked player in UGA’s 2017 class.
Then, on Monday, Georgia flipped Madison, Alabama prospect Monty Rice away from the LSU Tigers. A 4-star inside linebacker, Rice had been committed to LSU for less than a month (December 12, 2016) before Smart’s staff was able to engineer the flip. Rice is ranked the No. 221 overall player and No. 9 ILB.
When discussing his decision, Rice said Georgia felt like a “safe selection” for his playing future. He cited strong relationships with Smart, defensive coordinator Mel Tucker and Glenn Schumann, as well as the opportunity to see early playing time.
“Georgia is young, but they have some good players and they have good coaches coaching them. There is a chance to play early and help Georgia get to that next level.”
After Rice’s flip was announced, UGA faithful immediately welcomed him to the family.

With the flurry of action on the trail over the past two days, Georgia now sits at No. 2 in the recruiting rankings – behind only Alabama. On the heels of a dominant bowl performance, an exceptional incoming recruiting class, Nick Chubb and Sony Michel both returning, as well as Jacob Eason having a year of experience under his belt, it’s safe to say that Smart and the Bulldogs will be clubhouse favorites in the SEC East next season.
