Four-star inside linebacker Monty Rice committed to LSU on Monday, giving the Tigers 18 total commits in the 2017 recruiting class.

On Monday morning, Ed Orgeron’s Tigers lost a 4-star quarterback commit when Lowell Narcisse decommitted.

Five hours later, Coach O’s staff addressed the defensive side of the ball and picked up a commitment from 4-star prospect Monty Rice, the No. 9 inside linebacker in the country.

Rice, a native of Madison, Alabama, is also ranked as the No. 221 overall player in the 2017 recruiting class. He told Scout that Tigers defensive coordinator Dave Aranda played a huge role in his decision to pick LSU over Auburn and Georgia — especially with the move Aranda made on the eve of the recruiting dead period.

“I love the coaching staffs at Auburn, Georgia and LSU, but what happened yesterday is coach Aranda called my mom. All the coaches wanted to be the last one to see me. I really didn’t feel like seeing anyone. [Aranda] was just like, ‘Alright, I understand,’ and was perfectly fine with it,” Rice said. “The other schools didn’t want to hear that, but it is what it is. It shows Dave Aranda is a caring person. A lot of coaches in the NCAA, they don’t really care about you as a person as long as you can play, then they want you, but as soon as you get hurt, they don’t want you.”

Orgeron’s Tigers now move up in the 2017 class rankings to No. 9, pushing Gus Malzhan’s Tigers, who lost out in the race for Rice, to No. 10.
