Mitchell Wasson Narrowing In On Decision After Alabama Decommitment

Mitchell Wasson is narrowing in on his college decision after decommitting from Alabama earlier this week.

Three-star kicker Mitchell Wasson reopened his recruitment on Tuesday, decommitting from the Alabama Crimson Tide. The uncertainty around when he would receive a scholarship and the high cost of attendance as an out-of-state student led him to his decision.

For those reasons the home-state Georgia Bulldogs appear to be in the driver’s seat to land Wasson.

“They have a scholarship and whoever starts gets put on scholarship,” he told Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald.

Starting, however, is not guaranteed. He would have to beat out two other kickers on the roster – Rodrigo Blankenship and William Ham.

Wasson is also interested in another SEC East school, Florida, though the Gators already have highly-touted kicker Eddy Pineiro on the roster. Coincidentally, Pineiro was committed to Alabama at one point as well. For that reason, Gainesville doesn’t appear like a likely destination for Wasson.

He hasn’t completely ruled out the Crimson Tide, however the scholarship situation would need to change to make him feel comfortable.

“Florida’s somewhat in the gate if they can get me a better offer,” Wasson said. “It’s mostly just Georgia and Alabama.”

Wasson is ranked by Scout as the No. 15 kicker in the nation and No. 1 kicker in the state of Georgia for 2016.
