    Why You Need To Care

Barring something extremely strange, BYU is going to the Las Vegas Bowl. It could go to the Hawaii Bowl if there’s a collapse down the stretch, but for the most part, the Cougars are all set up with the post-season. On a five-game winning streak, the team is doing a good job of getting through the tight games beating East Carolina and San Jose State in fights as part of a better-than-it-gets-credit-for season. If Nebraska wins out, there’s a chance BYU could play as many as eight bowl teams, and it could all but end the hopes of Mizzou’s post-season dreams with a win.

Missouri went on strike, the school president resigned, and now it’s football time again. While the protest from the Tiger players might not have gotten the job done, they did bring a national light to the controversy. Off the field, the players came up with a huge win. On it, they’ve been a total mess scoring just 25 points in the last four games and coming up with more than 13 points just once in the last seven games. Now the Tigers have to win two of their final three games against BYU, Tennessee and Arkansas to avoid suffering a painful embarrassment.

    Why BYU Will Win

It’s not just that Missouri can’t score, it really can’t put points on the board. It’s like pulling teeth for the team to complete a meaningful pass with the third-worst third-down conversion percentage in college football hitting just 29% of its plays. The receivers aren’t able to get open, outside of one big run against Mississippi State the ground game isn’t going anywhere, and the terrific defense isn’t getting any help. Yeah, it might have been a game against Wagner, but in that 70-6 win, BYU scored one fewer point than Mizzou has scored in its last seven games.

    Why Missouri Will Win

The defensive effort is being wasted, but it’s still been a phenomenal year. The Tigers succumbed to Dak Prescott and Miss State a bit late to make the 31-13 score look a little worse than the game was, but their D did everything possible to keep the game close. The pass rush is great, the run defense is a wall, and the secondary is getting the job done. It might be crass to put the important problems of last week into football terms, but could all of these distractions done something to sort of help Mizzou reset things? The passing game isn’t going to work all of a sudden, but this could be tight if the defense pitches yet another gem.

    Player Who Matters

This has been a wildly disappointing year for Mizzou RB Russell Hansbrough, who ran for close to 1,100 yards last year with ten scores, but this season can’t find any room. He finally scored his first rushing touchdown of the season last week against Miss State, but he became a bigger deal as one of the player leaders during the protest. Can he step up against a good BYU run defense? The spotlight will be on to help try to carry the offense through the doldrums.

    What’s Going To Happen?

Will Missouri be able to really play after all of this? The defense will rise up and keep BYU from getting the passing game going, and the offense will take advantage of good field position and a few key turnovers on the road to pull off the stunning win. Much will be made about how the team rallied together, but really, the Tiger defense will be that much better than the BYU offense.
