Mike MacIntyre took over a Colorado football program in 2013 that had not seen a winning season since 2005, and hadn’t been to a bowl since 2007. The previous two years before his arrival, the Buffaloes had won four games to 21 losses. Needless to say, the once-proud program was at an all-time low.

That all changed this season, as MacIntyre and the Buffaloes went 10-3, winning the Pac-12 South, and have a chance at the school’s first 11-win season since 1994, when Bill McCartney was roaming the sidelines.

For his efforts, MacIntyre has been named the AP Coach of the Year, though he says the award isn’t about him.

“I’m so proud of our players and our coaches and their hard work,” MacIntyre told Campus Insiders. “It all goes to them. Our chant around here all the time is ‘players make plays, players win games,’ and it all goes to them.”

The success didn’t come early for MacIntyre in Boulder, as the Buffaloes went 10-27 in his first three seasons in charge, including a dismal 2-25 in Pac-12 play.

The patience in what MacIntyre was doing proved to be worth it, as Colorado, behind a stout defense that finished No. 17 in total yards allowed per game at 328.3, led the charge.

“It’s a great honor to see the joy in their faces as we’ve won this year and I’m just lucky enough to have ‘head coach’ in front of my name and be able to accept these awards for them.”
