    Why You Need To Care

SMU really has been trending upward ever since Larry Brown took over the team in 2012. The Mustangs had only seen one 20-win season during the 21st century until Matt Doherty accomplished that in the 2010-11 season.

Associate head coach Tim Jankovich has this squad running like a well-oiled machine — even though Brown is serving a nine-game suspension following NCAA sanctions. The No. 19 Mustangs are 6-0 right now with two of their wins coming on the road against Stanford and Texas Christian. They’re coming off a 98-44 win against New Hampshire on Saturday.

Michigan has certainly seen better days than these unranked ones it’s experiencing now, but the Wolverines are still 6-2 on the season. Michigan lost back-to-back games to Xavier and UConn in November, but it’s responded with four straight wins to right the ship.

Head coach John Beilein led his team to its first road win of the season against North Carolina State on Tuesday before taking down Houston Baptist Saturday.

Let’s see if SMU can defend its home court.

    Why Michigan Will Win

The Wolverines have some deadeye shooters on the perimeter. They’ve already taken 186 triples so far this season and hit on 43.5 percent of them. Generally, the team with the best player wins. Caris LeVert may just be the best player in this matchup. He’s averaging 19.3 points per game and shooting 52.2 percent from the field. Michigan needs to get him going and limit SMU’s perimeter game to win this one.

    Why SMU Will Win

Just like the Wolverines, the Mustangs know how to knock down the long ball. They hit on 44.1 percent of their three-point attempts. SMU will have to space the floor and sink spot-up jumpers, and they’ll have to close out and force Michigan to put the ball on the floor. Nic Moore will be a key player — as usual. He’s hitting 41.9 percent from the outside. Keith Frazier will have to add his scoring contribution, too, but he can make a bigger difference by locking down on defense and poking the ball free to create transition opportunities.

    What’s Going To Happen?

SMU does a really good job of making the most of its possessions. It’s only turned the ball over 64 times, and it’s shooting 52.4 percent from the field. Those two reasons are why the Mustangs will win this game. Michigan will get some much-needed triples from LeVert, but SMU will limit Michigan’s spacing and force some turnovers to gain the momentum, which will carry the Mustangs through the end. Of course, Moore’s double-digit-scoring effort will help, too.
