The No. 7 Michigan State Spartans will take their undefeated record to Lincoln, Neb. Saturday night for a date with the sinking Nebraska Cornhuskers in a Big Ten primetime game.

Fresh off the bye week, the Spartans (8-0, 4-0 Big Ten) are riding a 12-game winning streak (longest in 59 years) and hoping to get to 9-0 for the just the fifth time in school history. Last time out, the Spartans were finally able to put a team away somewhat early, defeating the Indiana Hooisers 52-26 two weeks ago. Connor Cook set career highs with 30 pass completions, 52 attempts, 398 passing yards and 4 touchdowns. He also set a Michigan State single-game record with 416 total yards. Cook recorded his third straight 300-yard passing game and 11th straight game with a touchdown pass. Aaron Burbridge also had a bug performance for the Spartans, reeling in 8 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown. It was Burbridge’s third-straight 100-yard game and sixth of the season — the third-best single-season total in Spartans history.

The nightmarish first season for Mike Riley and the Huskers (3-5, 1-4 Big Ten) continues after last week’s 55-45 loss to the Purdue Boilermakers. The Cornhuskers are in danger of not only losing bowl eligibility, but having their first seven-loss season since 1959. In a losing effort, Ryker Fyfe filled in for the injured Tommie Armstrong and was asked to throw early and often. He completed 28-of-48 passes for 407 yards. The redshirt-junior quarterback also threw 4 touchdown passes, but he matched those with 4 interceptions to put the Boilermakers in short yardage situations. Nebraska would put together a 29-point fourth quarter to give Purdue a scare, but it wasn’t enough.

Saturday will mark the 10th meeting between the Spartans and Cornhuskers with Nebraska leading the all-time series 7-2, but Michigan State has taken the last two after losing the first seven.

The game will play out like the season. Nebraska will be the better team for most of the game, but when it comes down to that one big play needed, it won’t happen. Michigan State will be great early, will disappear in a puzzling way for long stretches in the middle of the game, and then will come through big in the final few minutes to pull away just enough to get out alive.
