    Why You Need To Care

Maryland’s season is basically over now that bowl eligibility is out of the picture and the coaching situation is a question mark, but it can still make a lot of noise and screw up the Michigan States and Indianas of the Big Ten world. It’s not like the Terps have been miserable – they played Wisconsin, Iowa, Penn State and Ohio State tough – but they haven’t been able to come up with wins, mainly because they can’t stop screwing up.

Michigan State was looking like a team just asking to get nailed. It was playing with fire time after time after time in close-call wins over Rutgers, Purdue, and to a certain extent, Indiana, to go along with the thrillers against Oregon and Michigan. Was last week’s gag – let’s just call it what it was – against Nebraska the wake-up call the team needed? It’s still in the hunt for everything including the playoff, and it can get there by winning out against Ohio State, Penn State, and in the Big Ten championship game – and then getting a little bit of help.

    Why Maryland Will Win

How did Nebraska do it? The passing game came up with the big drive late against the Spartans, but it was also decent throughout the game on third downs. This isn’t the Michigan State defense of past years and can be moved on. The run defense has been solid when it has everything tuned up, but this is the game for the Terp passing game to try to get going. That’s a problem considering this is one of the least-efficient air attacks in America, but Perry Hills pushed the ball a bit at times on Wisconsin – he has to at least try going downfield.

    Why Michigan State Will Win

Michigan State has a lot of issues, but turnover margin isn’t one of them. Sparty has won the turnover battle in every game this year except for the win over Rutgers – going only a -1 – with just five giveaways on the season. On the other side, Maryland is the worst in the nation in turnover margin at a whopping -17 and a -8 over the last four games. The Terps have to be nearly perfect to win, and they won’t be.

    Player Who Matters

It might be a lost year for the Terps, but defensive back/kick returner William Likely is coming up with an all-star season all the way around. Defensively he’s come up with ten broken up passes and 38 tackles to go along with his gamechanging kick return skills averaging close to 25 yards per pop on kickoffs and 18.7 yards per try on punt returns. He hasn’t had too many chances over the last few games because everyone is staying away from him, but Michigan State knows all about him. In last weeks’ MSU win, Likely averaged 33 yards per kickoff return. He needs the ball in his hands.

    What’s Going To Happen?

Michigan State’s D comes out with a purpose. It’s not like the Spartans weren’t trying before, but now they’ll be fully focused after all the drama of last week. Maryland is good enough to keep this from getting truly ugly, but they’re about to run into a buzzsaw.
