March 10, 2016The Michigan State Spartans have made it to the NCAA Tournament. Here’s a preview of the team and a prediction of how they’ll do during March Madness.
Team: Michigan State Spartans
Record: 29-5
Conference: Big Ten
Head coach: Tom Izzo
How they got here: Won conference tournament
Tom Izzo gets the most out of his players, and the duo of Denzel Valentine and Bryn Forbes are a handful for any team to deal with. Valentine can score inside and out, and he combines the rebounding of a quality big with the passing of a superstar point guard. He might be the most complete player in the college game, and that balance is only bolstered by Forbes, who can knock down the three. Matt Costello and Eron Harris provide depth, and this is a team that rarely makes mistakes. A Final Four contender.
If Valentine gets into foul trouble the Spartans can run into some issues offensively while adjusting to a new style. There’s a drop-off offensively beyond the top five scorers, and getting production out of the bench will be key in the Dance.
The Spartans could bring Tom Izzo another national championship. This team has all the tools to go far, and any exit before the Elite Eight would be a huge disappointment. Not reaching Houston would be a bit of a surprise, but this team’s ceiling is cutting down the nets after the title game.
