Pep Hamilton has decided to leave the Cleveland Browns for Ann Arbor and become an assistant coach for the Michigan Wolverines.

It’s safe to say Michigan will win more games than the Cleveland Browns again next season, and Pep Hamilton wants to be a part of the Wolverines’ pursuit of a College Football Playoff berth.

Multiple reports said Monday night that Hamilton has accepted an offer from Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh to leave the Browns and become the Wolverines’ assistant head coach and passing game coordinator. ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter was one of the first on the news.

Hamilton has spent the last four seasons in the NFL. He was Indianapolis’ offensive coordinator before becoming the Browns’ associate head coach and quarterbacks coach for last season. Hamilton’s history with Harbaugh appears to have played a role in his decision to go back to the college ranks.

Hamilton served as Harbaugh’s wide receivers coach at Stanford in 2010 after spending the previous seven seasons as an assistant in the NFL. The hiring confirms rumors that Harbaugh was pursuing Hamilton to join the Wolverines following receivers coach Jedd Fisch’s departure to become UCLA’s offensive coordinator.

Harbaugh is still trying to fill out his staff after having multiple departures. In addition to Fisch, offensive analyst Jimmie Dougherty left to join Willie Taggart at Oregon, and player personnel director Tony Tuioti went to Fresno State to coach the defensive line.

Harbaugh has preferred to higher coaches with NFL experience. Only defensive coordinator Don Brown and linebackers coach Chris Partridge do not have such experience on Harbaugh’s staff.
